Koln (win & over 1.5) vs Erzgebirge Aue @ $1.67
Mungersdorfer Stadion, 9.00pm Saturday
Second time round backing the Germans. I’ve taken you deep into the Fatherland to watch a 2. Bundesliga match. Koln is the former home of one of our favourite disciples, Poldi! Koln are form favourites to go straight back up and they’ve kept a fairly decent side which will be too much against a team made up purely of guys with blonde hair and blue eyes. Here at the Average Punter we are well aware of thriving diversity in Germany and it’s the Billy Goats who will reign supreme. Anyway, I don’t know too much about this other side, but I do know that they’re going to lose 3 – 1.
Prediction: 3 – 1
Shandong Luneng vs Guangzhou Evergrande (win & BTTS) @ $2.80
Jinan Olympic Sports Center, 9.35pm Saturday
The first foray for AP’s into the Chinese League and what a game I have for you guys! Cannavaro’s lads have been storming the league since Talisca and Paulinho have joined. They have intergrated seamlessly into a squad that already possesses Jackson Martinez, Alan and Goulart. The combination of Paulinho and Talisca has led to two consecutive 5 – 0 wins. They have come good against lower ranked teams, but I can’t see Shandong being able to roll such a top side.
But to be fair to Shandong they are 3rd, one place above Guangzhou and possess a very formidable front line, which is why I’ve backed them to snag a goal. The fact that their midfield is made up of average Chinese players bodes well with a victory for my boys from Guangzhou.
Prediction: 1 – 3
Wolfsburg v Schalke (BTTS) @ $1.72
Volkswagen Arena, Saturday @ 11:30pm
Both teams come into this game with some good preseason results. They both had tight wins in the DFB Pokal against lower league teams last week which gave them their first taste of a competitive game. Schalke come into this game as favourites but with Wolfsburg putting away class teams such as Napoli and Ajax in their last few matches, it is too difficult a to call. Wolfsburg have scored in each of their preseason fixtures and have a decent looking attack. Where I see their weakness is in defence, which falls perfectly into Tedesco’s hands.
Schalke did lose two key midfielders in Meyer and Goretzka, with the loss of the later hurting the Royal Blue the most. Tedesco has done well to keep his forward line in tact, which was decent last season, banging in 53 goals. All teams get up for the first game of the season which will result in some goals. I’m predicting a 1 – 1 draw in this game.
Prediction: 1 – 1
Hibernian (win & BTTS) v Aberdeen @ $5.20
Easter Road Stadium, 12.00am Sunday
I’m going with my heart in this one. Hibs have yet to let me down and at Easter Road, I can’t see them dropping points. It has been a tough few weeks for the lads in green, they’ve been knocked out of the Europa League and dropped points at St Johnstone. Their defence is the biggest concern which is why I’ve backed The Dons to sneak a goal in this one. They have bought Milligan and he will be able to slip into either CB or a defensive mid role. This should shore up an otherwise leaky defence. Hibs’s home record has been good this season (including preseason) and have been good for a couple of goals.
Aberdeen have done well to patch up the loss of Adam Rooney, but they also have been knocked out of the Europa League. They come off a tidy 4 – 0 victory at home verse St Mirren but it won’t be as easy verse a far better Hibs side. Their last few showings is what has led me to expect at least a goal from them. This will be a tightly fought contest but with Neil Lennon calling the shots, I expect a 2 – 1 win for the Hibs.
Prediction: 2 – 1
Atletico Madrid (win -2) vs Rayo Vallecano @ $2.00
Estádio Wanda Metropolitana, 4:15am Sunday
Rayo were promoted last season but it is clear that they don’t belong in La Liga. They got towelled up by Sevilla in their last match, anyone watching would appreciate how much Sevilla dominated. All through preseason they have leaked goals and their transfer activity hasn’t assisted in plugging those holes.
Atletico on the other hand did great business in the transfer window, with the most impressive move (or lack thereof) was keeping Griezmann. Atletico have started well so far with a 4 – 2 victory over Real in the UEFA Supercup. At home Atletico are a different beast, there is a very slim chance that Rayo will snag a goal but it’s likely that the attacking might of Costa, Griezman, Lemar and Correa will bag a hatful. A comfortable 3 – 0 win here for Atletico.
Prediction: 3 – 0
