Girona (win & over 1.5) v Real Valladolid @ $2.35
Estadi Municipal de Montilivi, 4.15am Saturday
Last seasons overachievers Girona will be looking to pick up where they left off last season with a dominate display at home to newly promoted Valladolid. Valladolid were the lowest ranked of the promoted sides and are probably a favourite for relegation. Girona have a very settled squad with not a huge amount of comings and goings and a home game against a promoted side is a huge opportunity to start the season with 3 points. They’re coming off a decent preseason with their most notable result being a 4–1 win over Spurs. While these Saturday morning fixtures have been AP’s achilles heal, these odds are too good to pass up and I’m confident the Girona front men Stuani and Portu can get the job done.
Prediction: 3 – 1
Reims v Lyon (win and over 1.5) @ $2.00
Stade Auguste Delaune, 4.45am Saturday
I try not to put myself in a position where my multi can get sunk this early in the weekend but here we are, 2 legs before 6am on Saturday. Following Lyon closely this season as they were the leg I picked for our futures multi and if they’re gonna be there or thereabouts this season they should win this game comfortably. Their front three is as dangerous as any in the league and after one round it looks as though Memphis Depay picked up where he left off last season. A little extra feeling in this one after Reims sunk my leg last week, I’m hoping Les Gones can avenge my poor judgement.
Prediction: 0 – 3
Ipswich Town v Aston Villa (win) @ $2.10
Portman Road, 12.00am Sunday
After a disappointing end to last season Villa have started strong going two from two. Ipswich away is never an easy fixture but they’ve started slowly and I’m struggling to see where the quality lies. Getting knocked out of the EFL cup by League 2 side Exeter City can’t be great for confidence and if they bounce back with a positive result I’ll be very surprised. After fending off Premier League interest over the summer, Jack Grealish has started the season on fire and if this continues he’ll be demanding a very healthy transfer fee. With Grealish, Adomah and Kodjia and an experienced back line, Ipswich will continue to slide.
Prediction: 0 – 2
Brighton v Man United (win) @ $1.75
The American Express Community Stadium, 1.00am Monday
It’s not often a game comes a long where you really don’t care which way it goes. I mean, United cruise to another win and the multi lives, United lose or even draw and chaos incurs. It looks as though the board, players and fans are starting to get sick of Mourinho’s excuses and breaking point couldn’t be too far away if he doesn’t keep winning. United got lucky with a 3rd minute penalty against Leicester and then looked second best for most of the match until they extended their lead midway through the second half. As much as I would love a loss and a Mourinho implosion, I just don’t see it happening against a Brighton side that looks like it will be fighting for survival even in these early parts of the season.
Prediction: 0 – 2
Nimes v Marseille (win over 1.5) @ $2.10
Stade des Costieres, 5.00am Monday
Hopefully we’ll be setting the alarms early on a Monday morning to watch Les Phocéens chalk up the first individual multi win of the season. Coming off an impressive 4-0 win at home to Toulouse, Marseille go to newly promoted Nimes and will hopefully maintain the rage. Expect Thauvin to start after coming off the bench in the opening round but besides that the side should be the same. With a front four that all have goals in them and a very experienced backline, Marseille should sweep aside a bang average Nimes outfit.
Prediction: 0 – 3
