Betting tips, soccer previews and predictions
Everton (win) v Southampton @ $1.95
Goodison Park, 12.00am Sunday
I’ve got a bit of a spot for Everton this season, with Rooney leaving and Richarlison coming off a double last week, I think this is a far more balanced line up than the past few seasons. Unlucky last week against Wolves, they all but dominated the game even when down to 10 men when Jagielka was sent off late in the first half. Deadline signings Mina, Gomes, Zouma and Bernard are all expected to feature in the match day squad, which already bolsters English GK Jordan Pickford, Tosun, Theo and Gylfi.
Southampton were poor last week at home to Burnley and will look to sit back and defend deep away from home. Too much class from Everton, 2-0 with Walcott scoring one from an offside position. – Conservative Dave
Prediction: 2 – 0
Leeds (win & over 1.5) v Rotherham @ $1.61
Elland Road, 12.00am Sunday
I’m going back to a safe place and backing a team that has yet to fail the Average Punter. Leeds have been fluid and full of intent under Bielsa. It’s well documented that his teams start well (minus Lille) and burn out towards the end of the season, so I’m jumping on the gravy train. Bielsa rested a large portion of his starting 11, but he did give Bamford a run out which could result in him starting against Rotherham. They have banged in 7 goals against 2 promotion contenders and whilst Rotherham have improved since they were toweled up by Brentford, they will be no match against Leeds.
Rotherham have been a highly controversial team for the AP’s with yogi throwing them to the dogs. I tend to agree with Yogi’s assessment of them. They were absolutely garbage verse Brentford and with their goalkeeper being named as the man of the match verse Ipswich it just goes to show they were real lucky. A comprehensive victory is expected for Leeds. I’ve taken a conservative approach to this leg, but there should be plenty of goals in it. – Le Professor
Prediction: 4 – 1
Villarreal (win and under 4.5) v Real Sociedad @ $2.30
El Madrigal, 4.45am Sunday
This leg has had me going back and forward for the last few hours. I counted four switches between this and total goals under 2.5 @ $1.80 – no one wants to scuttle a Tier 1 bet on a $2.30 leg and I hear you, we really should be looking to tick it over. But in my Big Show heart of hearts, I ask that you don’t clip my wings, however I could still be swayed either way.
These two sides sit in the next grouping outside the top 3 and will be hopeful of finishing in a Europa League place. Both teams have lost notable personnel over the summer with Sergio Canales and Odriozola leaving Socieded while their might leader Xabi Prieto has bought himself a nice little cottage in the small fishing village of Albarracín as he eases into retirement. For the Yellow Submarine, Castillejo has all but wrapped up a move to Milan which will see Bacca stay in Spain, whether he is available for this tie is another story. However, they have splashed a bit of cash so Gerard Moreno and Ekambi are both viable options with the former banging them in for fun at Espanyol last season.
Why I think Villarreal will ultimately win comes down to a more settled unit as Javier Calleja will be at the helm again, the lads are in front of their home fans, they have a great record against Sociedad and the Santi Cazorla effect. Sociedad haven’t been strong in their preseason and I can’t imagine they will come to El Madrigal to play expansive football but the home side should be good enough to unlock this defense as their main man at the back Inigo Martinez is only just coming back from injury and won’t be fully match fit.
Look for Santi to pull strings and set up a 1 – 0 win for an AP favourite, and just that extra little bit more value to stretch out that tier 1. – Big Show
Prediction: 1 – 0
Valencia v Atletico Madrid (BTTS) @ $1.95
Estadio Mestalla, 4:00am Tuesday
Leaving it till Tuesday morning to wrap up our Tier 1 multi but this game definitely won’t disappoint. Atletico are coming off a huge Super Cup win against Real that took them all the way to extra time and I think they’ll need these 3 days to recover. Both sides have made notable signings and have definitely bolstered their respective attacks over the summer. Valencia have brought in Batshuayi, Gamerio and Cheryshev while Atletico have brought in Kalinic, Martins and the huge signing of Lemar from Monaco. These teams will definitely take some time before we see their best football but the talent is too tempting to go past. Both sides have had strong preseasons and will both be looking to start the season off with a big 3 points. – Yogi
Prediction: 2 – 2
