France v Argentina (over 1.5 goals and 8+ corners) @ $2.15
Kazan Arena Sunday 12:00am
Don’t get me wrong, Argentina have been absolutely gutless this tournament and it’s no suprise given their qualifying form. In saying this I’m not 100% willing to count them out, why you ask ? The Messi factor. Argentina possess the best player in the world, arguably ever and it’s only gonna take a special performance from him for Argentina to progress.
This being said I believe Le Bleus will be too strong. France have quality all over the park with plenty of impact off the bench. Deschamps is yet to settle on his best eleven having picked a different side in every group game but this won’t be an issue this early in the tournament.
I think this game will be won in the midfield with France having the superior engine room. Pogba has a huge opportunity to put his stamp on this tournament against an aging and underperforming midfield. With an average age of 32 in the heart of the Argies, Pogba will be far too athletic and powerful for them to deal with.
Unfortunately I don’t think Messi will get his fairytale World Cup and France should progress but I do think we’ll see a sprinkle of that Messi magic.
Prediction: 2 – 1
Uruguay v Portugal (BTTS) @ $2.25
Fisht Stadium Sunday 4:00am
Surely it’s not too much to ask that both teams bag at least a goal each? Especially when they boast three of the best strikers in world football. Between them they scored 115 goals in the last calendar year and all I’m asking for is 2… to add to that they’ve both scored in all three group games.
Another tough game to pick here and I’m not willing to put my dwindling reputation on the line. Portugal have been inconsistent so far this tournament but as they displayed against Spain, when Ronaldo is on song anything is possible. Their biggest concern is their aging centre halves and as this tournament goes on the old legs could be telling. Add to that they’re up against probably the most potent strike force in Russia at the moment. Uruguay look to be peaking at the right time, coming off a 3-0 drubbing of the jacked up hosts. They’ve tweaked their personell and shape and it seems to have worked a treat.
I think Uruguay have the cattle to go deep and cause some serious upsets this tournament but as long as Ronaldo is on the pitch I’ll be taking my money and running with both teams to score.
Prediction: 2 – 1
